About

Banfrackingcolorado.org is an evolving collaboration between concerned citizens and grassroots community groups who believe it's time to end the dangerous practice of hydraulic fracturing in Colorado.

Mary Russell, educator and resident of Garfield County launched the original petition on September 25, 2012.  In a few short days it attracted over 2,000 signatures -- a sure sign of greater public support for banning fracking in our state.

Citizen groups working to protect their communities from oil and gas drilling/fracking reached out to Mary and she reached back.  Thus, a collaboration was born!

Banfrackingcolorado.org has one simple purpose:

To provide a message and a medium for The People of Colorado to communicate to elected officials and Governor Hickenlooper, that we do not support the continued use of hydraulic fracturing that threatens our health, air, water, wildlife, environment, public spaces, property values and hope for a safe and prosperous future.

Reality Check

We are under no illusions about what we ask in a state where the oil and gas industry is deeply entrenched.  But the time has come to stand for what is right, ethical and in accordance with a growing body of independent scientific findings.  Our conviction is further underscored by the multitude of unanswered questions about the impacts of oil and gas drilling/fracking on our health and environment, inadequate enforcement of existing (but inadequate) regulations, and multiple industry exemptions.  These forces combined put Coloradans at too great a risk, therefore fracking needs to be stopped.

We are ready to make the shift to efficient, local, clean energy resources that renew, rather than destroy our environment, communities and democracy.  We know that change will only come when enough people demand it over the roar of industry lobbyists and corporate donors.

2,850 Coloradans have signed.  Please join us in creating a movement to ban the dangerous practice of hydraulic fracturing in Colorado.
